russian for beginners

To me, language is water. Fluency is like water-bending (point if you recognise the reference:). Water has physical properties and laws according to which it moves, but it is versatile and can move anywhere in any shape possible. And I feel like language is the same. One learns the rules of grammar and pronunciation, and as a result can ‘weave’ the language however one desires (bending the rules in the process;). 

Russian has a lot of opportunities for bending and shaping what you say (especially the swear words, if you ask me). Be prepared for silly comparisons, random words, unexpected etymology, and overall great fun! Pushkin and Tolstoy won’t roll in their graves, I promise.We will look the Cyrillic alphabet in the eye and stare it down, and by that I mean learn to read it and write in it. And find out all about Babushka. A language is much more than government of countries it is spoken in. There are a lot of widely unknown things about Russian culture. I’m talking the wholesome, the weird, the unexpected, the uncanny, and the pleasantly surprising. 

Come with me if on a journey into Siberian winter, Moscow church bells, the letters Ы and Ё, Splean, Kolkhoz, Volga, Vobla, and Vodka (note that there will be no actual vodka at the classes).

My name is Eren, and I was born in the middle of nowhere in South-Eastern Europe, just above the Black Sea and the Caucasus mountains. This has given me plenty of weird experiences that I now shock people with, sometimes. I also have a degree in Linguistics, and my favourite aspect of the subject is Phonetics :) 

The more languages we learn, the more our mind broadens and is able to comprehend things from different angles. I’m excited to contribute to someone’s journey of discovering wonderful things Humanity entails.
