Who does a city belong to? What makes us feel at home in a country or community? Why can two people remember the same event very differently? Why can questions about housing, language, migration, or protest look different depending on where we live?
In this ADVANCED course, we’ll take familiar questions and look at them from somewhere else. Using short articles, videos, podcasts, news, interviews, and film, we’ll start with topics we may recognize from our daily lives and see how people are talking about similar questions in the Spanish-speaking world.
We’ll explore how cities and neighbourhoods are changing, what language can tell us about identity, how people remember the past, and how ideas about migration, belonging, work, and protest can different from one place to another. Rather than looking for one “right” answer, we’ll listen to different points of view and bring our own experiences and ideas into the conversation.
Along the way, we’ll practice explaining and supporting our opinions, asking questions, responding to different points of view, and agreeing and disagreeing in Spanish - all while returning to one central question: What can we learn when we try to see the world from somewhere else?
