How much of what we know about the world comes from a screen? A film can shape the way we imagine a country, a YouTube video can introduce us to someone else's everyday life, and an advertisement can influence what we think is beautiful, successful, or desirable. But who creates these images, and what happens when we begin to believe them? Does media simply reflect the world around us - or does it also help shape it?
In this INTERMEDIATE B2 course, we will use film and digital media as a window into everyday life across the Spanish-speaking world. We’ll watch films, YouTube videos, advertisements, music videos, and social media content to talk about the people, places, and cultures we encounter on screen.
We’ll explore how media can shape the way we see different people and places, challenge stereotypes, inspire change, and offer a glimpse into family relationships, work, humor, and everyday life across different Spanish-speaking cultures.
Along the way, we’ll build our vocabulary and confidence in Spanish by expressing opinions, telling stories, asking questions, and comparing what we see on screen with our own experiences - all while returning to one central question: Does art imitate life - or does life imitate art?
