Have you ever wanted to read poetry but found it intimidating or thought it was only for a particular kind of crowd? Maybe you never had the chance to read poetry or simply thought it was boring?
I'm here to tell you that poetry is, in fact, some of the most concise, powerful, dense, short and out of the box thinking you will ever read in your entire life. This introductory Hispanic Poetry course will provide some (brief) chronological historical background highlighting works from each of the following literary periods:
Early Modern / Baroque
Romanticism
Modernismo
Vanguardias
Post War/Testimonial
Contemporary and Experimental
Through these literary periods, we will explore some of the historical context that influenced its development as well as the social context resonating beneath these works and periods. Concepts such as Empire, Coloniality, Materiality, Gender, Religion, Indigeneity, despair and Capitalism will arise as realities and lens through which to read these poems throughout the course. Through close readings and group conversations, we will begin to unpack poetry as both apporachable through context; and meaningful through the concepts that can help us anaylze content from our past and our world today.
