Intro to Yiddish Theatre: Hits of the East End Stage
The East End of London was a hotbed of Yiddish theatre in the late-19th and early-20th centuries, with world-famous artists, loyal audiences and a wide range of work gracing stages such as the Pavilion and Grand Palais (aka 'Grimpele'!).
We will look at the rich history of East End Yiddish theatre by reading and discussing extracts from some of its most famous and popular plays - including Der kenig fun lampeduse (The King of Lampedusa) by Samuel Harendorf, Stempenyu by Sholem-Aleykhem, and Der soykher fun venetsye (The Merchant of Venice) by Shakespeare.
This class will be taught in Yiddish, with play readings in the alef-beys. English translations of the extracts will be provided where possible.
