Beginners A1/A2 (In-Person)

Wednesdays 6:00 - 8:00pm

Learning languages leads to new worlds, and in this beginner's course in Latin American Spanish, the plan is to travel and discover a lot.

How many continents can you count in your mother tongue? Is Latin America a continent? What does your map of images and cultural references look like? Frida, salsa, empanadas, guerilla, football; mojitos and. . ?

While studying question forms, verbs, and gender rules in Spanish, we will build a map of Latin American native populations and today's countries. We will explore their literature by reading short stories by writers such as Eduardo Galeano and Gabriel Garcia Marquez and fragments of comic books like El Eternauta, Fantomas or La selva misteriosa.

We will listen to popular music to learn about politics and pronunciation, like Victor Jara's protest ballads, early twentieth-century tangos and the latest hip hop and trap by Calle 13, Ana Tijoux and Wos. We will also learn how to break Spanish patriarchal gender rules and use inclusive language by singing Kumbia Queer songs or watching Las Tesis' performs. Students' music suggestions and curiosity are welcome.

Together we are going to create a postal card collection from the Latin American cultural, grammatical and emotional geographies visited during the course.
